The dossier

Everything the Alliance had on him fit on one page. Most of it was wrong.

Summary

A moisture farmer with a pilot's hands

He grew up on a planet that gives nothing away — two suns, no water it doesn't make you dig for, and a horizon that stays exactly where it is no matter how far you walk toward it. He fixed droids. He raced a T-16 through Beggar's Canyon and told anyone who'd listen about it.

The uncle who raised him kept him grounded on purpose, and did it out of love, and did it a season too long. By the time the sky finally came for Luke it took the farm with it.

What makes him dangerous isn't the Force. It's that he keeps choosing people over the plan, and keeps being right about it.

On Bespin that instinct cost him. He left his training half-finished because his friends were hurting, and he walked into a trap built specifically out of his own decency. He was wrong about the odds and right about the reason.

File 003

Field kit

What he carried down to Bespin, and what came back up.

Recovered · no

Kenobi's lightsaber

His father's, then his. Blue plasma, worn grip, a hilt built for a taller man. Went down the shaft with his hand still on it.

Recovered · yes

T-65B X-wing

Astromech socket permanently assigned to R2-D2. Flown into a swamp, dug out of one, then flown straight into a trap.

Recovered · yes

Bespin fatigues

Pale flight tunic, dark trousers, no rank showing. He dressed like someone expecting to talk his way out.

File 004

Three suns

The same person, three times, each one paying for the last.

IV

The farm boy

Wants off the planet more than he wants anything. Gets what he asked for on the worst possible terms, and flies the trench anyway.

V

The apprentice

Trains in a swamp, leaves early, loses the argument and the hand. Learns the one thing nobody wanted him to know.

VI

The knight

Comes back quieter, dressed in black, certain of one thing everyone else calls sentiment. Throws the saber away and wins.

I'll never join you.
